: believing that people are generally selfish and dishonest

: selfish and dishonest in a way that shows no concern about treating other people fairly

I was called cynical earlier today by a friend as we talked about a personal matter.  It struck me; I really do not believe that I am cynical.  I try to be positive and find the good in people.  But maybe I am a little cynical; it is getting harder and harder not to be in the world that we live in.

Today, we start the government shutdown.  This is not the first time we have had this happen, but I was too young to care during the last one; I was in high school and the world revolved around me back then.  Now, I can see the big picture.

It makes me sick that political posturing has shut down the government and that people are so against providing affordable healthcare for its people.

It makes me even sicker to read the hate filled, ignorant posts that fill my Facebook and Twitter feeds.  The posts are generally from people that, if they would take the time to look into the matter, would benefit from Affordable Care Act.  What it shows me is that the world is full of cynicism and hate.  It makes me sad to an American.

Change happens.  It is happening regardless of how many negative posts you write or like.  Instead of spreading hate, why not pray for our leaders, volunteer your time, or get back to work?  That is what we need right now.  Be a productive part of society instead of bringing it down.

I think we too often make choices based on the safety of cynicism, and what we’re lead to is a life not fully lived.  Cynicism is fear, and it’s worse than fear-it’s active disengagement. –Ken Burns

Love begins by taking care of the closest ones-the ones at home.  –Mother Teresa

I like to think of myself as a realistic-optimist 🙂
